Someone must've hacked my account, I heard yall haven't been receiving these
In the words of an Elder Niutupuivaha, Hello Hello everyone. I just got word that some people haven't been receiving my emails for the past month or so, so here's a quick update of everything that's been going on.
A lot has been happening recently. I was transferred over to a YSA (Young single adult) ward here in Calgary, and it has been super cool. The only downsides are we don't get fed cause everyone has just about as much money as us now, and people tend to cancel a little more now. The upsides are so awesome though. The people here are often so open to hearing the gospel. So many people have been prepared to hear the gospel, and we've been blessed to be teaching tons of people. I think we have like 20 or so relatively solid friends we're teaching rn, and 3 of those people are super close to being baptized, so keep Frankie, Vasif, and Wyatt in your prayers. We were teaching Wyatt the other day about the word of wisdom and he hit us with one of the greatest quotes I have ever heard. We brought up some promised blessings if he can quit some of the things he is struggling with, and he told us this gem when we asked him how he has seen word of wisdom bless his life as he is quitting. "Just look at you guys. You guys are [&!$#ing] glowing. I mean look at your skin! That's a juicy fruit of the gospel right there." I love this man so much.
My companion and I have also been packed busy recently. We have been going on 1-3 exchanges a week the past couple weeks because of some problems happening in the zone. It's been awesome though because we have been seeing miracles while going out. A lot of times when we go out with other missionaries, they don't have tons happening in their areas, so we get to go finding all day. Last week we had two days in a row where we street contacted for probably 4-5ish hours along with some other finding methods all day, but we were blessed. Our mission president recently promised us that as we are exactly obedient in talking to EVERYBODY, we will be led to those being ready to hear the gospel. I am not kidding you when I say we were each in 200+ conversations that day, and both days in a row we found 20+ people who were at least interested enough to give us their numbers. At the end of the first day as well, we were supposed to be in an area on the trains for another 30 minutes, but all the sudden I just felt sick to my stomach like we needed to be somewhere else. We immediately hopped on the next train to go anywhere else, and it ended up taking us in the wrong direction. The second we got off the train, we started talking to everyone again, and the first person I talked to was praying that someone would be sent to help her that day. We were actually also going to the same end location, so we were able to travel, talk, and teach for the next 20 minutes as we were on the trains together. She is super awesome, and we were definitely led to talk to her that day.
Other cool stuff:
- Frankie came to church and will probably be baptized this next week.
- On exchanges with the APs, he met a dude and talked with him for an hour straight like 3 blocks away from me. Companionless for an hour was kind of funky.
- Went and spent the day on a First Nations reserve (a place where the government pays for indigenous people to live for free because of wrongs the government did in the past). Kind of a sad place with lots of drugs and "reservation dogs" (pretty much just wild dogs that want food from you / bite you).
- My companion speaks Ukrainian and I speak Chinese. Calgary is super diverse, so when we go street contacting, it is almost always in 3 languages.
- My other companion wore the same socks for 4 days straight on 3 days of consecutive exchanges.
- Direct quote from Wyatt's prayer: "Thank you God for these guys who I consider friends and family. Obviously Horsley is new but I like him a lot, and you know that Chapman is the bomb."
- Vasif is from Ukraine, but only speaks Russian. His English is dang good though since he writes poems.
(I haven't been sending emails btw, just wanted to cause a little chaos for those who don't read these)
I just want to end this email with a spiritual thought, and I want to bring it to the parable of the sower in the bible as found in Mark 4. In this chapter he talks about the parable of the sower, and pretty much it goes as this. A sower went out to sow seeds and they fell in 4 different locations. One fell by the wayside, one fell onto stoney ground and sprung up too fast only to die by the sun, one fell in the thorns and then was strangled as it grew, and the final one fell on good ground and produced much fruit. The group he was with did not understand this and as JST of Mark 4:9 says, "And when he was alone with the twelve, and they that believed in him, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable." So this implies that those who didn't believe him left, and consequently missed when he explained what this was about. Matthew 13:10-11 JST says, "For whosoever receiveth, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance; but whosoever continueth not to receive, from him shall be taken away even that he hath." So just like how those who stayed received more after they stayed to learn more, so will we. It goes along the same lines as staying and receiving more help, more Christlike attributes, coming closer and closer to the commandment to "be ye therefore perfect." I am so far from perfect in all aspects of the gospel including understanding, but I just want to invite everyone to "stay" and have things work out as you receive more and more. I love my mission, and I love Jesus Christ. This is hard but one of the greatest things I have done in my life. I wouldn't change it if I could.
Love you all.
- Elder Horsley
